The Navy has now just released some information related to the development of the Rail Gun for their ships. For people who may not know here is some basic information on the Rail Gun. The Rail Gun is a electromagnetic accelerator that can accelerate an object to extremely high speeds. in some test runs they can shoot a projectile at 5000 miles per hour and hit a target 220 miles away in less then 6 seconds and the projectile will have the kinetic energy of 33 megajoules, without the use of combustible accelerators. They are still in the early stages of development.This technology is not something new there Maglavs that Japan and various other countries have developed for their trains. they uses electromagnets to accelerate to higher speeds then convectional combustion engines. their only problem is how to power these guns and that is their next step in development is to find a way to store the massive amount of energy required to power these powerful guns.
In my opinion this pretty cool, not for the use of warfare. but for the commercial applications for this, if they can shoot a projectile a 5000 miles per hour why not develop this for a more reliable way to travel to space and also they could use it to be able to transfer resources across the globe faster so that people who need these resources like people who have been through natural disasters like an earthquake can receive aid faster. but this is just my personal opinion.
